Chemical vs flush portable toilets — which type do I need?

One of the most common questions we get asked is about the difference between chemical and flush portable toilets — and which is right for a given situation. The answer depends on your use case, the duration of your hire and your budget.

Chemical portable toilets

Chemical portable toilets are the standard type most people picture when they think of a portable loo. They use a chemical solution in the holding tank to break down waste and neutralise odours. They don't require a water connection — the tank is filled when delivered and replaced or emptied during servicing.

Best for: Construction sites, small events, rural locations, short-term hire, any situation where there's no water supply available.

Pros: Completely self-contained, no water connection needed, most affordable option, widely available across the UK, can be positioned anywhere with vehicle access.

Cons: Not as comfortable as flush units, require regular servicing to stay hygienic, not appropriate for high-end events.

Flush portable toilets

Flush portable toilets work more like a conventional toilet — they have a proper flush mechanism and a separate holding tank for waste. The better units have their own fresh water tank so they're still self-contained, while others require connection to a water supply.

Best for: Events with higher guest expectations, welfare units, longer term hires, any situation where user comfort and experience matters.

Pros: Much better user experience, feel more like conventional facilities, better for longer term use, improved hygiene.

Cons: More expensive than chemical units, self-contained versions still require regular waste emptying, mains-connected versions require access to water supply.

Luxury toilet trailers — the third option

For events where quality really matters — weddings, corporate events, high-end festivals — luxury toilet trailers are in a different category entirely. These are proper bathroom suites in a trailer format, with full flush toilets, running hot and cold water, vanity mirrors and high-quality interior finishes. They use self-contained water and waste systems and require no mains connection.

Quick decision guide

Construction site or building work? — Standard chemical portable toilet. Welfare unit if you need canteen and drying facilities too.
Small outdoor event or garden party? — Standard chemical portables for most budgets; flush portables for a better experience.
Wedding or high-end event? — Luxury toilet trailer. The difference in guest experience is significant and the cost is lower than most people expect.
Large festival? — Mix of standard chemical portables and urinal units for efficiency. Luxury trailers for VIP areas.
