Chemical vs flush portable toilets — which do I need?

There are two main types of portable toilet available in the UK — chemical and flush. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right option for your event or site, and avoids paying for more than you need (or less than you should have).

Chemical portable toilets

Chemical portable toilets are the standard blue-box units you see on most construction sites and outdoor events. They work by using a chemical fluid in the waste tank to break down waste and control odour. There's no running water — the toilet is flushed manually using a foot pump that circulates the blue chemical fluid.

These units are self-contained, relatively lightweight, easy to position and service, and cost-effective. They're the right choice for most construction sites, outdoor events, festivals, markets and any situation where a basic, functional toilet provision is needed.

Chemical portable toilets are typically serviced weekly — the waste tank is emptied, fresh chemical fluid added, and the unit cleaned inside and out.

Flush portable toilets

Flush portable toilets use a genuine flushing mechanism with a water tank and a proper toilet bowl. The flush experience is much closer to an indoor toilet, making them more comfortable for users and more appropriate for events where guest experience matters.

There are two types of flush portable toilet: those with self-contained water tanks (no mains connection required) and those that connect to a mains water supply. Self-contained flush units need more frequent servicing as the water tank needs refilling, but can be positioned anywhere without plumbing access.

Flush portable toilets are typically found in luxury toilet trailers for weddings and events, and in welfare units for construction sites.

Which should I choose?

For most construction sites, chemical portables are the practical choice. They're cost-effective, easy to service and do the job well for workers who need functional welfare facilities.

For weddings, corporate events and any occasion where guest or worker experience is a priority, flush facilities are strongly preferred. A luxury toilet trailer with flush toilets is a completely different experience from a chemical portable and is worth the additional cost for events where impressions matter.

For large festivals and outdoor events, a combination often works well — chemical portables for general attendance areas (cost-effective and easy to service at scale) and luxury flush trailers for VIP areas or hospitality zones.
